How is the Flipped Classroom Disrupting Corporate Education?

The concept of the flipped classroom has already proven successful in the world of education, and is now being noticed by the workplace. Recent studies have shown that the flipped classroom method has successfully increased engagement and retention of students’ learning, and has even seen an increase in pass rates. Making training more effective and spending time more productively is the key to a successful training program, and if the flipped classroom can work in education, why not in organisations? Time within the workplace is costly, so if a business can reduce their training time, this will also decrease the cost – an excellent win-win.

The traditional training method of classroom lectures followed by practical work at home has dominated the landscape for years; by contrast the flipped classroom involves learners building knowledge before their training even starts. All learners are different, they learn at different paces and react in different ways. The benefits of the flipped classroom are really shown here, in that it is more adaptive to their needs.

Some learners will take longer than others, and might watch lectures on video at their own pace, repeating them as many times as they want. This also gives the learner the responsibility to coach themselves, making their own methodology undisruptive to others and giving them a sense of ownership over their own learning.

Learners can then come to training sessions more engaged and ready to apply and practice what they have learned; as a result, the training sessions become more productive. Learners have assured knowledge, and can work collaboratively to bring other learners up to speed by sharing that knowledge. This makes it easier for everyone to apply their skills and build off each other’s strengths, giving the trainer the freedom to work around the classroom and adapt the training to be learner-focused, concentrating on areas where more training is required.

A key benefit of bringing learners together within this environment is that it encourages skill-set sharing and team-building, giving learners additional training beyond the original subject focus.

The flipped classroom is a proven success in education, and it’s time to expand it into the workplace to help improve staff training everywhere. To find out how we can help your organisation flip the staff classroom, fill in our contact form and we’ll be in touch.
