In our previous blog, (the 5 reasons why eLearning can benefit charities and the third sector), we looked at the benefits that implementing an LMS can bring.
These included improved flexibility, staff retention, onboarding, reduced costs and the opportunity to use the LMS platform as a marketing tool.
Today, we look into open source in more detail.
What is open source?
Open source means that the source code can be edited as much as you want giving you freedom to change it to tailor it to your needs. Open source is not a completely free option. Some solutions providers are free, some charge a small licence fee but ultimately, it is free to change the source code.
Why choose an open source platform?
If you choose a proprietary software, you are not allowed to change or even access the source code. The features you are given with the system might also not fit your organisation’s requirements or needs. They also come with licensing fees. You can read more about the benefits of open source vs proprietary systems on our blog.
What about the third sector?
We have illustrated on the map below how a volunteer can be trained using an integrated open source solution.
This is just a high level example of how three open source standards – a Content Management System (CMS), a Learning Management System (LMS) and a xAPI Learning Record Store (LRS) – have been integrated together to create a seamless process.
As we explained above, the great thing about open source is that vendors, such as Webanywhere, can tailor a product to unique specification.
The main benefits include:
If you are interested in an open source solution, to start this process, we recommend taking the time to draw up a specification. As an open source service provider, Webanywhere is able to use the MoSCoW methodology to work in partnership with a client to create a comprehensive technical and functional specification.
