Quality overtakes cost as primary adoption driver

According to a recent survey of 300 organisations by Accenture,  the open source software market has reached a turning point, with more than a third (38%) of UK and Ireland based companies expecting to migrate mission-critical software to open source in 2011. Of the organizations using open source, almost nine out of ten (88%) increased their investment in the software in 2010 compared to 2009.
Of particular interest is the news that the increase in demand for open source is being increasingly driven by quality, reliability and speed, not just cost savings. This is a significant change from just two years ago when uptake was driven mainly by cost savings. We can expect to see this trend develop as open source continues to evolve and address even more business critical functions.

Cost control with open source

Although cost savings are no longer the primary driver for open source adoption,  open source is seen as contributing to an overall lower total cost of ownership, especially on software maintenance costs, initial software development time and initial development costs.

The biggest challenge for most companies is still around training their internal development teams in how to use open source.  This will lead to a drive towards outsourcing to open source development expertise that is available in the open market, especially as the sheer volume of open source alternatives now available as substitutes for proprietary software suites now enables open source to be used with absolute confidence across the enterprise.
